Columbus indie band Trying released a surprisingly intense, wonderfully catchy set of tracks with its second EP of 2019, titled I Just Can’t Feel the Rhythm, on Friday, December 6. Though the release clocks in at just over 10 minutes, it is remarkable, featuring haunting verses, beautiful clarinet melodies and much more noise than usual.
The EP is noisier and more intense than Trying’s usual work; it opens with “That Is Not Your Dirt,” which features a squealing melody and frenetic drum work in the beginning, moving to a lower yet still distorted timbre – but not slowing down – as vocalist Cameron Carr sings, “Don’t bury yourself yet.”
The next track, “Don’t Worry,” feels hazier and blurrier, moving languidly through indulgent verses and choruses, and “What Have I Become?” still feels jewel-toned as Carr’s voice melts over echoing guitar lines and crisp percussion. And throughout every track, gorgeous clarinet lines from musician Laura Lenhart shine in their catchiness and smooth strength, bringing a perfect finishing touch to the quirky indie music.
Yet I Just Can’t Feel the Rhythm holds plenty of tension and dissonance. This is intentional; the EP serves as a counterpart to Trying’s earlier EP, I Won’t Let You Lose the Rhythm, which is meant to convey support between the pair. I Just Can’t Feel the Rhythm instead represents struggle.
All of this culminates in the title track, “I Just Can’t Feel the Rhythm,” which closes the EP. It’s a driving track, and though the clarinet melody is irresistible and warm, the song as a whole feels tense and dark. Carr’s vocals move from strained to quiet as the theme of struggle is conveyed well through the song’s overlapping instruments and melodies that compete for listeners’ attention. The track feels mature and impressively layered, and it is a perfect close to the EP.
I Just Can’t Feel the Rhythm complements Trying’s earlier EP, I Won’t Let You Lose the Rhythm, well. The two EPs will also serve as a base for the band’s sophomore full-length album in 2020, which will merge both releases and add new material to blur the lines between the two.
