Something Personal: 19 Things I’ve Learned in 19 Years

Just a heads-up: this post is probably the cheesiest, so I’ll keep it brief.

Yesterday was my 19th birthday. I’m not a big fan of my own birthdays – it’s just another day, after all, and I don’t love being the center of attention – but the past two years have not been the easiest, so this year, I celebrated.

If you know me or my family personally, you might have heard about some of the stuff that’s happened in the last two years, both positive and negative, but if not, just know that essentially every aspect of my life has changed. It’s been exhausting at times and full of so much joy I couldn’t believe how lucky I am at others, and if I’m being totally honest, there were days when I wasn’t sure if I would make it to eighteen years old, let alone nineteen.

But in both the good times and the bad, I’ve been learning and growing. Below are nineteen things that I’ve learned, both in the past nineteen years of life but especially in the last two years or so. Some are cheesy and some are goofy, but I mean every word.

Thanks for bearing with me. Indientry will return to its regularly scheduled program later today with a Little Thoughts post.

  1. Love people.
  2. Love yourself.
  3. There are few things that make me feel better than seeing a dog. (Any dog.)
  4. It’s okay if the only thing you can do some days is get out of bed.
  5. If it’s not in my Google Calendar, I’m probably not going to do it. (courtesy of Danielle Klein)
  6. In a society that wants women to hate our bodies, the most political thing we can do is love ourselves.
  7. No matter how hard I try to be funny, I am not a very funny person – and I am certainly not the funniest of my sisters.
  8. I am more than just my identities and disorders.
  9. Always keep pushing. Remaining stagnant will never help you.
  10. Having three sisters is the best thing I could possibly ask for. Ever. I don’t know how I got lucky enough to have those three by my side, but I’m more than grateful.
  11. Sometimes, all you need is a good cry followed by a tall glass of water.
  12. An opinion is whether or not pineapple belongs on pizza. When you invalidate someone’s gender, mistreat same-sex couples, or fight against inclusive policies, that’s oppression. (from @MavenOfMayhem on Twitter)
  13. It’s important to serve others, but it’s also important to take a moment for yourself every day. You’ll be no use to anyone else if you’re burnt-out and exhausted.
  14. Seek out criticism. You’ll be better for it.
  15. Sing. Everywhere. Even if you’re no good, sing your heart out whenever you feel the need.
  16. Be flexible.
  17. Be proud of what you do or what you love, even if you think it’s silly. There’s nothing quite as impressive as being passionate.
  19. I have thousands of other things to learn.
