Pentatonix (PTX) is an American a cappella group consisting of five vocalists: Avi Kaplan, Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Mitch Grassi. Pentatonix sings mostly pop music, sometimes doing covers from other songs or original songs. Their debut EP PTX, Volume 1 was released in 2012, followed by PTXmas the same year, with their third release, PTX, Vol. II, debuting at number 1 on Billboard ’s Independent Albums chart and number 10 on the Billboard 200 in 2013.
The first song on the album, Na Na Na, gives a lively feeling, and the vocals are flawless. The a cappella group does a fantastic job with this song. They make the song feel so peppy, and energizing. The second song on the album, Can’t Sleep Love, has an easygoing mood, and the vocals are, once again, flawless. The song, an original, has the lyrics, “Tell me, am I going crazy?/Tell me, have I lost my mind?/Am I just afraid of loving?/Or am I not the loving kind?”, which show the questioning feeling of finding love. Sing, the third song on the album, has a sprightly and energetic feeling. “I don’t know what you’ve been told/But music makes you lose control.” This song is about getting up, dancing and having fun! True to its lyrics and theme, this song is danceable, cheery, and fun. The fourth song on the album, Misbehavin’, starts off slow and calm. In the chorus, the lyrics, “Oh, but I never lie/Cause I’m yours, you’re mine/But I ain’t misbehaving, no/I ain’t misbehaving tonight.”, which shows that just because they are on the road and away from home doesn’t change anything, they’ll still be misbehaving. Ref, starts off with the backup vocals having a little pop mood, and leads into main vocals. The song starts off a little easy, and leads into a a dancey mood.
Pentatonix never ceases to amaze. Vocals are flawless and songs are brilliant. We could go on and on, and this album is certainly no different. If you haven’t yet heard it, go give it a listen!
