Album Review: Heart Vs. Mind – I Prevail

I Prevail is an American post-hardcore band. They released their debut EP “Heart Vs. Mind” in 2015. They gained popularity in late 2014/early 2015 after posting a cover of Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” to YouTube. I Prevail was formed in October 2013. Shortly after, the band began working on their first album. On December 1, 2014, the band posted a cover of Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” to YouTube. It almost instantly gained attention and peaked at #90 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at #23 on US Mainstream Rock Songs chart. As of June 2015, the song has reached over 11 million YouTube views.  On December 10, 2014 the band released the first two singles from their upcoming EP, Love, Lust, and Liars and The Enemy. The band released their debut EP, Heart Vs. Mind on January 26, 2015 and landed at #5 on the Billboard 200.  On March 12, 2015 rhythm guitarist Jordan Berger left the band after being unable to commit to the band. The band added touring members Tony Camposeo on bass and Dylan Bowman on rhythm guitar. The band embarked on a early 2015 tour and on June 24, 2015 they announced a summer tour called The Crossroads tour. The band will open for Crown the Empire and Hollywood Undead in fall of 2015 and play select shows from 10/8 to 10/22.

In the third song on the album, Love, Lust, and Liars, they have a few lyrics that could mean different things. For example, the lyrics, “I’ve told you once, I’ve told you twice/Stab me in the back and you’re gonna pay the price, mean you cheated on me, so now you’re gonna face the consequences” show that there was a betrayal somewhere along the line. The other lyrics, “You want me back now right?/Well let’s rewind to that night/That night where lust trumped love, and love got sacrificed/And now you beg for forgiveness, acting just like a witness/You expect me to lie down and act like it’s not my business?”, mean “You want me back, but I don’t want you after what you did to me”. Finally, some of the other lyrics of the song, “Now I realize, your fingerprints were at the crime/You think you know someone, and then it comes undone/They take the heart and run, funny how things end up now that you’re gone”, mean that it was that fictional person’s fault, I thought you were someone special, but I was wrong. The song starts off with innocent little electro noise, leading into the vocalist screaming. In the second to last song on the album, My Heart I Surrender, again, the lyrics have many meanings. For example, “I’m a ghost in your eyes/A shadow you can’t seem to recognize,” means that this person doesn’t notice the singer. This song starts off with another innocent beginning, this time with acoustic guitar, leading into easy-going vocals. Both Clean and Unclean vocalists are talented beyond belief, and it’s easy to see that, especially through their latest single release, Crossroads.

Although scream-y bands are not usually our type, I Prevail has been a hit with our staff. Their songs are both catchy and emotional, with lyrics that are more meaningful than most bands of the genre.
